Lalruong Taikuong: Hmar legendary hero’s stone trough
This stone relic called ‘Lalruong Vawk Kuong’ or ‘Lalruong Taikuong’ is one of the few remains that the Hmar tribe can relate to their oral history. The uniqueness of this trough (taikuong) is that it is made of stone. There is, however, no written historical evidence to prove its genuineness and its date of its construction. Yet, legend has it that the stone trough was prepared by Hmar legendary hero Lalruong to feed his pigs.
The stone relic which is located between Phulpui and Ngampabung villages in Hmar Hills, Manipur, is in dire need of preservation from the weathering process. Updates:
May 13, 2021: A tiny tin shed was constructed to cover the trough in 2018. However, it has no fencing and there were signs of burning fire woods inside the trough when we visited the structure in January 2019. There were also some human excreta just behind the shed. There is an urgent need to protect and preserve this unique structure.
