History of Hmar Students’ Association (HSA)
The Hmar Students’ Association (HSA) was founded in Imphal, Manipur, in 1939, making it the oldest philanthropic organisation of the Hmar Mizo tribe in India. Recognised and registered in undivided Assam, the HSA was established just 29 years after the advent of Christianity among the Hmars, reflecting an early awareness of education and student welfare.
The motto of the HSA is “Sinin, Hrilin, Sanin, Thuoiin, Serve the Nation”, meaning Work, Share, Assist, Lead, and Serve.
The HSA has grown into one of Northeast India’s most organised student bodies, operating across all Hmar-populated regions. It has played a crucial role in uniting tribal communities across Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Manipur. Its General Headquarters is in Churachandpur, Manipur, with multiple Joint Headquarters, Branches, Blocks, and Units across different states.
Governance Structure
The HSA is governed by three supreme bodies:
- General Assembly – The highest decision-making authority, empowered to amend the Constitution, oversee assets, and form or dissolve regional units.
- Executive Council – Functions on behalf of the General Assembly and can call emergency meetings.
- General Headquarters – Manages the organisation’s daily affairs and represents HSA in external engagements.
Administrative Divisions
- Joint Headquarters – Located in Manipur, Mizoram, Assam, Meghalaya, and Delhi, these oversee unit formations and coordinate with the General Headquarters.
- Blocks – Function independently under the General Headquarters, with the authority to establish units.
- Branches – Located in Silchar, Chandigarh, Bangalore, Pune, and other cities, catering to Hmar students and communities outside traditional regions.
- Units – The smallest administrative body, established in schools, colleges, and villages to support students.
Symbolism of the HSA Flag
The HSA flag is green with a white Pole Star in the centre, inscribed with H.S.A. in red.
- Green represents truth.
- The Pole Star signifies guidance.
- White symbolises purity.
- Red inscription reflects dedication and sacrifice for the nation.
Commitment to Education & Community Service
Despite changing times, the HSA remains committed to its founding principles—working, assisting, sharing, leading, and serving. With continued expansion and proactive student engagement, Hmar students now excel in top universities across India and abroad.
