One Day Symposium on “Hmar Nationalism and Its Political Roadmap” held in New Delhi

New Delhi, June 28, 2025 — A one-day symposium on the theme “Re-defining Hmar Nationalism and Its Political Roadmap within the Constitutional Framework” was held on June 28 in New Delhi, drawing a sizeable and enthusiastic crowd. The event was organized by the Hmar Students Association (HSA), Delhi Joint Headquarters, to engage intellectuals, scholars, and the community in a critical dialogue on the evolving discourse surrounding Hmar identity, nationalism, and political direction. The symposium brought together distinguished resource persons who offered profound insights into the historical, political, and institutional facets of Hmar nationalism: Dr. Vanthangpui Khobung, Assistant Professor at NCERT, presented a thought-provoking paper titled “Constructing Ethnic Identity: Historical Pathways of the Hmar Nomenclature and the Foundation of Nationalism”. Dr. Vanlallien Pulamte, Associate Professor at Gurucharan University, Assam, shared his perspectives on “Reimagining Unity and Strategic Engagement: Charting a Cohesive Framework for Hmar Political Integration and Consolidation”. He emphasized the importance of unity and strategic alliances in forging a sustainable and inclusive political roadmap for the Hmar people. Pu Immanuel Pulamte, General Secretary of the Hmar Inpui General Headquarters, delivered a compelling presentation on “Institutional Leadership and Ethnic Assertion: The Role of Hmar Inpui in Navigating the Nomenclature Crisis and Shaping Political Futures”. He highlighted the significance of organized ethnic institutions in addressing identity challenges and leading the community forward.

The symposium commenced with welcome remarks by Mr. Samuel Khobung, President of HSA Delhi JHQ and the Opening Keynote Address was delivered by Mr. Lalhmingthang Songate, Secretary of the Delhi Hmar Welfare Association. Mr. R Wilson Joute and Ms. Jolly Thiek served as hosts, seamlessly guiding the program with grace and professionalism. The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Jubilee Lalrammawi, General Secretary of HSA Delhi JHQ, who expressed gratitude to all speakers, participants, and volunteers for their active contributions. The symposium concluded on a solemn and uplifting note with the singing of the HSA Anthem, followed by a closing prayer led by Pastor Lalsiesang Zote. With a strong turnout and a rich exchange of ideas, the event marked a significant step in the collective efforts to reimagine the Hmar political narrative and reaffirm their shared identity in a rapidly changing socio-political landscape.
