District Profile: Pherzawl District, Hmarram.

1. Introduction:
Pherzawl District is one of the districts in the state of Manipur, India. It was officially created in December 2016 by bifurcating the erstwhile Churachandpur District. Named after its headquarters, Pherzawl town, the district primarily serves as a home to several tribal communities, with the Hmar tribe being the dominant group.Pherzawl District official map

2. Location and Geography:
Pherzawl District lies in the southwestern part of Manipur, sharing boundaries with Mizoram to the south and Churachandpur District to the north. It is characterized by hilly terrain, dense forests, and several rivers and streams. The district is largely rural and covered with natural vegetation, supporting a rich biodiversity.

3. Administrative Setup:
The district is divided into three sub-divisions:

  • Pherzawl
  • Parbung (Tipaimukh)
  • Vangai Range

Pherzawl town serves as the administrative headquarters. Due to its remote and challenging terrain, infrastructure and administrative development are still ongoing.

4. Demographics:
As per the 2011 Census (before its bifurcation from Churachandpur), the region now comprising Pherzawl has a tribal majority population. The main ethnic groups include the Hmar Mizo community.

  • Languages spoken: Hmar and English.
  • Religion: Predominantly Christian.

5. Economy:
The district’s economy is primarily agrarian. Jhum (shifting) cultivation is still practiced, though efforts are being made to introduce sustainable farming practices. Major crops include rice, maize, and vegetables. Animal husbandry and forest-based products also contribute to the local economy.

6. Connectivity and Infrastructure:
Pherzawl is one of the most remote districts in Manipur. Road connectivity is limited, especially during monsoon seasons. The nearest major town is Tuiṭhaphaia (Churachandpur). Efforts are being made to improve road networks and digital connectivity. There is currently no railway or airport within the district.

7. Education and Health:
Educational facilities are limited, with a few government-run schools and mission schools in operation. Higher education options are minimal. Healthcare is also basic, with primary health centers and sub-centers providing essential services. For advanced treatment, people often travel to Imphal or Churachandpur.

8. Culture and Society:
The district is rich in Hmar tribal culture and traditions. Festivals like Sikpui Ruoi (Hmar festival), Christmas, and other Christian celebrations are widely observed. Traditional dances, music, and folklore are an integral part of the social fabric.

9. Challenges:

  • Needs better road and communication infrastructure
  • Limited access to healthcare and education
  • Economic dependence on traditional agriculture
  • Geographic isolation

10. Developmental Outlook:
Government initiatives and schemes under tribal welfare, rural development, and border area development are being implemented. There is potential for growth in eco-tourism, horticulture, and handicrafts if properly harnessed.
