Mankhawng: A Hmar traditional trap to catch animals

Mankhawng is one of the traditional traps used by the Hmar tribe to capture wild animals – big or small. Most of these traps are employed along the margins of the jhum fields in the hills primarily to protect the crops. It is also used by farmers to catch bigger animals to supplement their protein diet. Hmarram.com had witnessed a really huge ‘mankhawng’ that trapped a black bear! The one shown in this photo is for smaller animals like squirrels, jungle mouse and others.
