Hmar Martyrs’ Memorial Stone, Phuoibuong, Mizoram

This memorial stone in Phuoibuong, Mizoram, was erected by the erstwhile Hmar Peoples Convention rebels after signing a peace accord with Mizoram government in 1994.

The memorial is inscribed with the names of 42 martyrs who laid down their lives for the cause of the Hmar tribe.

It still stands today as a mark of respect for their sacrifices in order to bring development, equality and prosperity in the northeastern region of the state, often referred to as ‘Hmar thimpui’.

Every year, May 16 is observed as the Hmar Martyrs’ Day not just in Mizoram, but in states like Manipur, Meghalaya and Assam.
