Indian Army’s Insensitive Approach to Local Sentiments in Hmar Hills

Parbung Army Check Post Notice Board Hmar Hills

This photo taken in January 2014 at the Army check post gate on the outskirts of Parbung sub-divisional headquarters shows the insensitive approach of the Indian Army towards the local population despite claiming to be friends of the hill people. First, the English translation of ‘Friends of the Hill People’ is not available in Hmar, the local dialect. It is however made available in Paite and Kuki dialects. Secondly, the name of the villages like Rawvakawt and Sipuikawn are misspelled. Photo: Lalmalsawm Sungte
